Yes, Tito Vermad. As the chairperson of the Essay Writing Contest Committee, I have opted to open the opportunity to Paetenian students who excel in elementary and high schools in the nearby towns of Pakil, Pangil, Lumban and Sta. Cruz. Based on my observations in the past competitions, academic or non-academic, some of our young kababayans enrolled in schools outside of Paete have been deprived of these opportunities to show and share their extraordinary talents.

Our committee has been successful in tapping these gifted students through this Essay Writing Contest. I hope other competitions would do the same in the future.

Last May 17, Saturday, the Essay Writing Contest on Environmental Protection Awareness and Preservation of Natural Resources was successfully held at the Adeci Bldg., Sangguniang Bayan Session Hall.

The contestants were given 1 1/2 hours to organize their thoughts, write the rough draft and then the final draft.

To avoid biases in judging the written essay pieces, each contestant was given a secret code number. This code was used to hide the real name and true identity of each contestant until the final judging. Hence, all four judges did not have any idea whose work they were checking and rating.

The judges devoted more than 1 day reading, checking and rating the amazing and amusing essay pieces of 15 elementary and 20 high school contestants.

There were 15 Elementary Category participants from 7 different public and elementary schools. Filipino was the medium used in writing their pieces. The topic: "KAPALIGIRAN AT KALIKASAN: BUHAY AT KINABUKASAN NATING MGA KABATAAN".

Below is the list of winners with their unedited winning pieces:

First- JAZMIN LABASTIDA BAISAS
Quinale Elementary School
Father: Feliciano Hernas Baisas
Mother: Angie Labastida-Baisas

Kapaligiran at Kalikasan:

Kapaligiran at Kalikasan:

Kapaligiran at Kalikasan:
Buhay at Kinabukasan Nating mga Kabataan

“Walang himala!

Environmental Protection:
The Key to a Better Life of the Future Generations

I’ve been here in this world for a decade and a half now and I must say, this “place” is really great. Well, “great” is not just that. For me, this five letter word is bigger than we thought. The majestic mountains filled with trees and plants, wide oceans and seas, plains with crops and flowers – Earth is such a breath-taking garden.

A lot of television programs and documentaries have shown the wonders of our nature… of our environment. There’s no doubt in its immeasurable beauty. It is a creation that no man could ever imagine. And for that, we must be thankful for these “gifts”.

But as years pass, we also witness the changing state of our environment. We have experienced a lot of disasters and calamities because of our own faults. And don’t you even wonder why there’s rain during summer and drought during rainy seasons? And also, we have heard many times from many people the words GLOBAL WARMING. Do we have the proper knowledge about this? We cut trees, burn trashes, polluting bodies of water, is this we do with our gifts? We know we get nothing but benefits from our natural resources; but why can’t we be fair and give what these “things” need? They don’t talk but I can hear their cry – actually, all of us can hear them. It’s just that most of us don’t even try to listen.

Little by little, our nature is getting worse. If we’ll keep on hurting and causing pain to our environment, I wouldn’t wonder if one day, these would all be gone and life would be harder especially to the coming generations. But let us not wait for the day that we’ll regret the way how we treat our environment now. I know all of us want the future generations to experience and see what God has created for us in the first place. But it’s not just “wanting” it, we must also do actions to make it happen. It’s never too late. We can make our own contribution in saving and protecting the environment anytime and in any way we can. It doesn’t matter if we’re young or old, rich or poor, as long as we’re true and sincere. It’s not just for our own good but mostly for the generations of tomorrow. Preserving and protecting what we have now is the most precious thing we can give them. Just imagine how better it will be in the future if we know how to give protection, love and care to these wonderful creations.

So let us start living it up today. Let us open our minds and hearts to give a better life for the future generations. Protect and preserve our environment. What we can give now will never be wasted tomorrow for this, I know, is not just for ourselves. And let me end this in wishing that the coming generations will be able to sing…

“I see trees of green, red roses, too. I see them bloom for me and you. And I think to myself… what a wonderful world.”

Environmental Protection:
The Key to a Better Life of the Future Generations

People would not want living in a wretched place. Yet you may see them trying to build places like this. They keep on complaining about their situation, not realizing that their own actions made their home not conducive to a healthy living. Yes, all those smoking, littering, deforestation and many others help build an unpleasant environment.

God created a paradise. The earth, which was formless, empty and dark, was transformed into a place of perfection. Everything man would need, He provided. He, then, gave man the authority to rule over the earth and His creatures. But men are monsters. They put an end on earth’s perfection. If the beginning of the earth attests God’s existence, the unpleasant environment, on the other hand, attests man’s wickedness.

Before, the environment was pleasing to one’s eyes. There were plenty of trees to hold the soil – trees that are healthy and bear fruits that are good for food. Endangered was not the word used to describe species of animals; for there were plenty of them. Bodies of water were crystal clear and water was safe to drink. Yes, all was pleasing!

But now, the environment is the exact opposite. There are not enough trees to hold the soil during natural calamities. Trash can be seen everywhere. Plastic wrappers and even used toiletries are not only seen in garbage containers but in bodies of water as well. Thick smoke gathers on air. Indeed, all is harmful.

The uncivility of man towards the environment resulted to big problems – pollution and nature destruction. The earth which was once a paradise is now full of violence.

Today’s hottest issue is global warming. Who or what probably caused this? The answer is none other than man; for man caused the pollution which later resulted to this. It has caused a lot of problems lately. This is a sign that lives of future generation are in danger.

Wildlife has tremendously changed. And there is without any doubt that man is a major contributor to this change. The extreme hunt for food and clothing materials and for collection purposes lead to the extinction of animals.

Trees do not only provide food but also shelter to animals. But because man lacks contentment, he would take every tree in the forest leaving animals homeless. Plants and animals may die when their needed resources are no longer available. Floods and landslides will occur when typhoons visit the country.

Smoking, dynamite fishing and other similar malpractices upset the environment as well.

People’s wants and needs are unlimited. It will only stop, of course, if people die. But resources are limited. This is one good reason why people experience hunger and poverty. The world is running out of resources. Think about the next generation, what will be left for them? Probably nothing if we do not replace the resources we took.

Can man do anything to restore the former environment? Yes. Man was asked to rule over the earth, therefore, it is man’s responsibility to protect the environment and preserve the natural resources.

Planting trees is the only way to bring back the thick forest. This will be a great help though it takes a lot of time. Driving less, quitting the use of cigarettes and cutting trees occasionally could be a big help to lessen air pollution. Letting plants and animals stay in their natural habitat would be an appeasement to them. Preventing all kinds of pollution could help cut global warming. These practices are not just for our own good, but for future generations as well.

Stop complaining about the world’s situation. Today is not a time for man to whine. Today is a time for man to correct every bad action he does and be a great contributory factor in restoring the environment. Healthy environment means healthy lives.

Environmental Protection:
The Key to a Better Life of the Future Generations

We all know that as of now our Mother Earth is slowly dying because of the effects that humans do for technology. Although many already know of the harmful effects that it does to the world, people still continue to live their lives ignoring these important issues.

Signs are already shown that the place we are living in is constantly changing, not for the better, but for the worse. Many has evolved since the beginning, but these past years, too much has changed because of what we created, global warming. Ice and glaciers have melted, islands sank, too much air pollution and new diseases come about each year. It has endangered many lives, not just humans but also animals. We didn’t accomplished our mission, we did the opposite of it. Instead of caring and protecting God’s creation, we have destroyed almost everything He created. We overused our resources and now Mother Nature is getting weaker. There ‘s still time to change our way of living for the better, because if we don’t it might be too late for the future generations.

They wouldn’t be able to do the things we used to do as kids, like climbing trees, or swimming in the rivers or lakes. It would be a real shame if all the good things in this world would just be gone in a couple of years. They might miss everything about childhood, and waste time just playing video games all their childhood. Our kids should experience the fun we felt during our years. They should breathe the clean fresh air our parents used to breathe before all these pollution became abundant everywhere. Of course, everyone wants their kids and their own family to live a comfortable life, don’t they?

We may not bring everything back as it used to, but we can still save what’s left of our beloved Earth. Doing the right thing can be hard but we can still do it, even if it’s just step by step. Also, we’re not alone, everyone’s right behind you and they’ll give you the help you need, because it’s everybody’s responsibility to take care of the Earth. We shouldn’t just preserve nature we must develop it.

Technology’s been a great help but nature got its harmful side effects. We can always change a thing or two to make it nature friendly, that way it would be a greater help. And if it can’t be changed, it might be better not to use it, besides we already lived a thousand years even without technology. We can always find another way to progress.

Mother Earth and God wouldn’t be just the ones who are proud when all of her beauty is restored, even we can be proud of ourselves. So now, we should start fulfilling our true mission for everyone’s sake.

We are indeed very proud and honored because we have been instruments in exposing and developing the special talents of the Paetenian youth. Mabuhay ang mga Kabataang taga-Paete!
